Social Security area numbers by state

The first three digits of a Social Security number issued before 2011 are the area number, and they were assigned geographically. This table maps every area number to the state or territory that issued it.

Rows marked inferred are not in the Social Security Administration's published table — that table marks them "Not Issued," but numbers in those ranges plainly were issued, because millions of them appear in this file. We reconstructed those rows from the data itself; the confidence figure is the share of records in the range whose last known residence was in the named state. Full method here.
